Look for alternatives to Blogger if you want to feature the best in scouting information.

This website, as you can probably already tell, is all about scouting.  We really go out of our way to feature the latest and greatest information in the amazing world of scouts.  Whether you are a girl scout or a boy scout, it doesn’t really matter.  It also doesn’t matter which part of the world you come from.  If you are excited about the scouting lifestyle, this is the place to be because we give you all the information, resources and links you need to make the right decision as far as scouting options are concerned.

Now, with that said, you are probably excited about starting your own scout website.  I can’t say I blame you.  In fact, you are not alone.  This is not a random situation.  In fact, a lot of people who visit our resource website get so inspired, so motivated and so pumped up that they rush out there to put up their very own scouting resource website.  Believe it or not, a lot of people take a lot of videos on their scouting adventures.  A lot of people take a lot of pictures and this content has to have a home outside of their Facebook walls and Instagram accounts.  Now, this sounds all well and good because a lot of people actually keep journal entries.

Now, if you are a scout you already know that you should keep a journal.  Scouts, after all, have to be prepared and I can’t think of any better way to prepare yourself for your next scouting adventure than to take meticulous notes of your previous one. And if you take a lot of notes, it would really feel like a shame that you are just going to put all of this stuff in a notebook and leave it there. When, in fact, a lot of boy scouts actually take out a digital recorder or their mobile phone and dictate their experiences.  It’s not much different from the captain’s log sequences in the Star Trek series. You remember the Star Trek, right? When Captain James T. Kirk would say to the camera “starship log or star log” and he would give a short dictation of where they are, the challenges they’re facing and other details.  Scouts do the same thing.  They would dictate to their mobile phone and it really would be quite a tragedy to see all that stuff stored with no place to go.

Unfortunately, a lot of scouts would get that stuff transcribed and then dump it in a place like Blogger, Blogspot or WordPress.com.  They might as well have thrown that information away because their scout adventure website or scout online journal suffers from bad association.  People don’t like reading Blogspot blogs because of the bad quality of the content that normally gets stored on such websites.  Sure, there are good websites out there on those networks.  I’m not disputing that.  I’m not saying those websites don’t exist.  That’s not my point.  It is also true that for you to stumble upon one good site, you probably have to suffer through several thousand bad ones.  That’s how amateurish, crappy and downright cartoonish blogger is as a platform.

Now, we can debate this all day, every day, but at the end of the day, the only person who should count in this equation is the person you’re trying to appeal to.  These are potential visitors to your site.  And, I understand that you have a lot of information to share.   I understand that you are pumped up about the scouting lifestyle and you can’t wait to let the world know how awesome the life of a scout can be.  Believe me, I completely agree 100% with you all the way, but what I have a problem with is that platform you’re going to be sharing this information with.

What you have in your hands is a pile of gold.   It really would be a tragedy if you were to take that gold and flush it down the toilet.  Unfortunately, that’s exactly what you would be doing if you entrust all that data with a very lackluster and, let’s face it, discredited platform like Blogger.  I don’t mean to take a dump on Blogger here.  After all, it is owned by one of the most trustworthy brands on the internet.  It is a Google property.  But let’s call a spade, a spade.

Blogger suffers from a bad reputation because, for the longest time, spammers have beaten that platform to death.  They would dump all sorts of low quality, low-grade websites on blogger for free hosting purposes.  They would do that for SEO to get an SEO advantage. And, unfortunately, a lot of those websites remain and this is what poisons the Blogger brand.

If your whole point in putting up your website is to spread the word about the distinct joys, charms and benefits of scouting, you would really be doing your cause a big disservice by using Blogger as its online home.  You really would be, why?   People would automatically think that your content is either erroneous, incomplete or just a steaming pile of nonsense.  Do yourself a big favor.  Get out from under the negative branding of Blogger.  You can buy your own domain.  It only costs 8.95 a year.  You will also get your own paid hosting and it doesn’t cost you an arm and a leg.

To do yourself a big favor, look for alternatives to Blogger.  There are actually many of them and this is where the danger lies.  There’s so many of them that it’s too easy to go from the frying pan to the fire.  Sure, you may have decided to leave the frying pan of Blogger and all its negative baggage, but you might actually be taking a leap of faith straight into the fire because you end up with a Blogger alternative that is not much better.  Maybe it’s a spam host.  Maybe it has serious issues delivering visibility.  Or, it suffers from bad technical or customer support.  Whatever the problem may be, if you don’t approach this whole project in a systematic and methodical way, it’s very easy to end up with a low quality service provider.
